Thirteen

A David Williams Film

I was involved in the production of an excellent independent film by director David Williams.  The film had a long run at several top film festivals including Berlin, Toronto, and New Directors, New Films (at MoMA in NY). The score was composed and improvised by Carlos Garza, Shep Williams, and violinist Cecil Hooker at Pepperland Recording.

The director used mostly non-theatrical actors and got a very natural performance for his loosely scripted film play. Williams also wanted spontaneity in the score so he requested that we improvise as much as possible. In some cases the composers improvised the film score around some chords that had been worked out in advance.

We ended up with several hours of music to pick from and had no trouble finding interesting pieces to give him.  We only embellished a few of the musical sections that seemed to benefit from additional sweetening and orchestrations.

Our goal as composers was to smooth out the material without losing the spontaneity. Cecil Hooker's violin as the main ingredient moves beautifully between playful and pensive to give continuity to the film.

Thirteen has been an international success with screenings at three major film festivals. This film has also received a lot of positive recognition from film critics.

Roger Ebert's essay on Thirteen is sadly no longer available! Please contact us if you are interested in this.

Also check out indieWIRE's report on the Virginia Film Festival (in which Roger Ebert again has kind words for Thirteen).

Roger Ebert was overheard talking about Thirteen at the most recent Virginia Film Festival. (The Thirteenth Virginia Film Festival. hmm coincidence?). Speaking of which, Carlos Garza performed and original score for Nosferatu at the Thirteenth Virginia Film Festival with his new group, Silent Orchestra which also features Rich O'Meara on percussion.
